Ceremony Honors Arnold Grove's 22 Veterans from Three Wars
|
Thank you friends, neighbors and scouts for attending the May 11th Dedication Ceremony. Rain held off (mostly) to give us a beautiful day. More than 300 participants and guests made this day a great success.
This Dedication Ceremony honored 22 Veterans from the Revolutionary, War of 1812 and the Civil War. War Societies from all three came together to participate along with the Boy Scouts.

The Veteran's Ceremony Saturday the 11th of May was excellent. I was there and the crowd was rather large for an event like this. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all the descendants to come to Thomas Balch Library in Leesburg VA to do further research on their families and ancestors. We house many records and materials on most of the families honored. Some of this was used in the ceremony, however due to time constraints some things were omitted. Thanks go out to Ken Fleming & all who helped make it a memorable event. Special Thanks to the Scouts for doing this project and all the hard work put into it by everyone. Congratulation to all.

26 Scouts Earn Historic Trails Award
26 Boy Scouts from Troop 572 earned the distinct Historic Trails Award. This award is difficult to earn due to its requirements: 1) work with an Historic Society (like the Sons of Confederate Veterans), 2) renovate an historic trail/site or participate in a ceremony of significance, and 3) participate in a overnight camp out in the vicinity. Several scouts went above and beyond the requirements by participating in both restoration days as well as the ceremony, which is a true testament to their enthusiasm and interest in the work they accomplished.
Two Veterans Receive New Headstones from V.A.
Two local descendants, Donaldson for Ira Follin, and McCarthy for William Butts, aided in submitting applications and proof of military service to the Veterans Administration. Both Veterans were buried without headstones. Both headstones were received and installed before the Dedication Ceremony.
Restoration Work Day April 13th—Success!
Twenty-five scouts and members of the SCV had a productive day, logging in 166 man hours on April 13th. Restoration work was done for veterans Craven Lay (a large monument requiring a backhoe to lift) and Joseph Mayo. Additional restoration work on non-veterans was done for: wife of Aaron Scatterday, three family members of William Butts, Infant of Thompson, Bernard Clendening, and Margaret & JD McLinn. Iron fence around William Henry Potts was painted, 50+ headstones were photographed and loaded to findagrave.com and several trailer loads of leaves, ivy and weeds were removed from the cemetery stone wall. Additionally, final mapping was done for the new cemetery plot map, which now documents location of 270 of the 300 known buried in Arnold Grove. We are in great shape for the May 11th Dedication Ceremony, with just one remaining veteran headstone to restore (War of 1812 Samuel Clendening), Samuel W Hough's headstone masonry repair is curing, and we are waiting War of 1812 William Butt's new headstone to arrive from the Veterans Administration.
